THE FAKE COBWEBS by Mr. Lobo

THE FAKE COBWEBS By MR. LOBO

Mr. Lobo is going to tell you a wonderful story
about something wonderful that happened to a house
just like yours or a house not entirely unlike yours on Halloween.

It was late October and the walls were all trimmed with cardboard witches and pumpkins and orange and black paper decorations. When children came to the door on Halloween night they would get to see it all. But until that day the front door was shut and locked. The big black pussy that lived in the house saw it with her great green eyes; the Little gray kitty saw it with her little blue eyes; the kind house-dog saw it with his steady brown eyes; Even the sneaky rats that were so afraid of the cat had peeked in when no one was around. But aside from the children who would come for treats on the big day, the little black spiders had not yet seen anything! You see, the spiders lived in the corners — the dark corners of the attic and the dark corners of the cellar.

And they were hoping to see the Halloween Decorations as much as anybody. But just before Halloween there was a great clean-up began around the house. The The Witch who owned the house came sweeping and dusting and wiping and scrubbing, to make everything grand and dean for the Devil Baby’s birthday. Her broom went into all the corners, poke, poke — and of course the spiders had to run. Dear, dear, how the spiders had to run! Not one could stay in the house while the Halloween house cleaning happened. So you see, they couldn’t see the Halloween Decorations. Spiders are very curious, and like to see everything there is to see, and they were very sad. So at last they went to the Devil-Baby and told Him all about it. “All the others get to see the Halloween Decorations, dear Devil-Baby,” they said; “but we, who are so domestic and so fond of beautiful things, we are swept up. We cannot see it at all.” The Devil-Baby was very sorry for the little spiders when He heard this, and He said they should see the Halloween Decorations.

The day before Halloween, when nobody was noticing. He let them all go in the house, to look as long as they wanted. They came creepy, creepy, down the attic stairs, creepy, creepy, up the cellar stairs, creepy, creepy, along the halls — and into the beautiful front room. Their fat mother spiders and the old papa spiders, and all the little teeny, tiny, curly spiders, the baby ones. And then they looked! Round and round the house they crawled, and looked and looked and looked. Oh, what a good time they had! They thought it was perfectly beautiful. And when they looked at every- thing they could see from the floor, they started up the walls and furniture to see some more. All over the room they ran, creepy, crawly, looking at every single thing. Up and down, in and out, over everything the little spiders ran, and saw every one of the pretty things right up close. They stayed until they had seen all there was to see, you can be sure, and then they went away at last, quite happy.

Then, in the still, dark night before Halloween Day, the dear Devil-Baby came, to protect the room with a Hex for the children. But when he looked at it — what do you suppose? — it was covered with cobwebs! Everywhere the little spiders had been they had left a spider-web; and you know they had been just everywhere. So the room was covered with spider-webs, all hanging from the decorations and looped around the chairs; it was a strange sight. What could the Devil-Baby do?

He knew that children do not like cobwebs; They would never let their home be covered with those. No, indeed. So the dear Devil-Baby touched the spider’s webs, and turned them all to neon green and bright-white polyester!

Wasn’t that a lovely trimming?

They shone and shone, all over the beautiful room.

When the which and the children saw these they assumed they were bought from a store and left them in place because they looked so festive!

And that is the way fake cobwebs became traditional Halloween decorations.
