It’s “Horror Host Appreciation Month” Here!

FotorCreatedRemember, Remember, Remember November. October was quite a month! The launch of OSI 74 was a bit bumpy but a success nonetheless. With Wild Fridays, Saturday Morning Fun and Sleepovers, and Secret Sundays, how can you not want to delve into all of the fun? Now of course we are all suffering from Post Halloween Depression Disorder, but November is here. Every November is laid out with the autumn filled days leading up to Thanksgiving.

This year, there is much to be thankful for here at CINEMA INSOMNIA.

DevilDollThe ole grand misunderstood films we have been given from the past, present, and future! Miss Mittens, in all of her green glory, always bringing joy to plants everywhere through our television and computer screens. For the long line of Reel 7 girls who have come to attempt to boost our ratings with males from 18-25, we salute you! To you loyal SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS and CINSOMNIACS for continuing to support us and our mission to spread the news that, “THEY’RE NOT BAD MOVIES–JUST MISUNDERSTOOD!” But out of all these major components that make the show great, we are forever thankful for our legendary host….MR. LOBO!

For over ten years, going on fifteen, MR. LOBO has brought us the good, the bad, and the ugly of misunderstood films. Our show has been broadcasted on the air, through live stream, and now through the evolution of television OSI 74. MR. LOBO has worked a many sleepless nights through insomnia in order to bring CINEMA INSOMNIA to you loyal fans.

He, along with many other Horror Hosts, have brought joy and treasured memories to our homes for generations. This month, we honor them by appreciating them and all of their hard work.

Who are your favorite Horror Hosts of all time? Is there one particular one that will forever stick out to you since your childhood? What are your most favorite memories? Leave us comments down below or on our pages. Send us in pictures of your horror hosts! We will share them on our pages. If you had your picture taken with them, share them too.

We are counting down the days to Thanksgiving. Let’s Share about the Horror Hosts we are thankful for!

GIANT MONSTER MONTH demands a GIANT MONSTER FAN-OF-THE-WEEK!

SIR PAUL KNIGHT or “PAULZILLA” , has been watching good, bad, and misunderstood movies since his first hatching. His dear “Momzilla” recalls him peeking around the castle couch to watch THE WOLFMAN(1941) at the tender age of 3. Unlike other kids his age, he seldom had nightmares watching all the spookiness. He was lucky enough to catch  the tail-end of the AURORA Monster Model craze in the mid-70’s, working on the Glow-in-the-Dark versions of THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON(1954) and GODZILLA(1954) models with his Dadzilla.

After seeing most of the UNIVERSAL MONSTERS on TV, he came upon a wondrous find one day. While shopping with Momzilla, THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON leapt off the newsstand on a magazine emblazoned the title “FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND”.

This was Paulzilla’s first foray(or is it Forry?) into the wild world of Warren Publications helmed by the wonderful FORREST J ACKERMAN and JIM WARREN.  So began the journey into other Warren mags such as EERIE, CREEPY, and, of course, a little later, VAMPIRELLA. UNCLE FORRY was a writer, a literary agent, a principle founder of modern fandom, and probably had the world’s biggest collection of books and movie memorabilia. He was a great influence to both horror and science fiction and to Paulzilla.

After having his little impressionable mind blown with the release of STAR WARS(1977), he discovered another wondrous thing, the TV horror-host. Now allowed to stay up later, he found DR. MADBLOOD’S MOVIES on WAVY TV-10. Forever fascinated with the gent in the grey afro and lab coat saying “Hi, gang!”–as though he knew he was there! DOCTOR MADBLOOD(Jerry Harrell) taught Paul to love the really bad B-Movies, but not to take them too seriously and has been entertaining audiences in the Hampton Roads, VA area for over 40 years now.1379822_588007891235371_836957973_n
“He would happily warn us “Okay gang, We have a real ker-stinker tonight!” He still has his Halloween Special every year. Last year I was the CFTBL for the taping. I’ve been very blessed over the years and been persuaded to do numerous little bits or characters for the show, despite me being camera-shy and more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it.”

Back in 1999, Paulzilla’s writing colleague and mentor Deborah Painter, persuaded him to co-write an article on DR. MADBLOOD for SCARY MONSTERS MAGAZINE, Issue number 38. He’s been making contributions in SCARY MONSTERS ever since–a book thought to be the spirit successor to Forry’s FAMOUS MONSTERS.

51ByCafZ3JL__SY344_BO1,204,203,200_BTW Insomniacs, you can find CINEMA INSOMNIA host MR.LOBO in back issue #60, and #69 regarding the horror-host documentary he narrated VIRGINIA CREEPERS(2009) directed by SEAN KOTZ, and also a nice article on MR. LOBO’s mentor BOB WILKINS in issue #51. SCARY MONSTERS MAGAZINE has been going strong for over 25 years now, and I’m honored to be associated with it. In 2010, Paulzilla was approached by Debbie Painter to contribute a chapter to her book, FORRY: THE LIFE OF FORREST J ACKERMAN (McFARLAND PUBLISHING) relating his personal encounters with him over the years.

Ci_gigantisEven though CINEMA INSOMNIA aired only briefly in the HAMPTON ROADS area in 2003-2004 on COX 71, thanks to the inter-webs and Livestream channels like THE KREEPY KASTLE and THE VORTEXX, Paulzilla has been able to catch-up with CINEMA IMSOMNIA episodes, and really digs MR. LOBO’s homage’ to the great hosting legends, Mr.John Stanley and Bob Wilkins.

“Mr.Lobo has his own unique style, but you can definitely see the influence these two gentleman had on him. Mr. Lobo was broadcast on a number of stations in Virginia and has legions of Insomniacs here.

Finally, after years of being a fan of the show, I got to meet Mr.Lobo and the lovely Dixie Dellamorto Lobo, at Monster Fest-11 in Chesapeake,Virginia,in 2014. I happily left the SCARY MONSTERS table I was manning to purchase MR. LOBO’s Fan Club Kit at the CINEMA INSOMNIA table.

I am now OFFICIALLY SK1196! To make the experience even more wonderful, I was asked, along with MR. LOBO and COUNT GORE DE VOL to be Costume Contest Judges at this fun and fabulously frightening event hosted by CRAIG T. ADAMS(AKA Brain and Uncle Feloneous Madblood). Yummmm..A horror-host sandwich! Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, I later, along with the other guests like ORMON GRIMSBY, and CRAIG T. ADAMS, got to have dinner with MR. LOBO and Dixie after the show. What a great day that was. Paulzilla just wants to say “How honored I am to be nominated Sleepless Knight Of The Week! Thank you!”

10815853_10152413067037187_2084288932_nSIR STEVEN COURSE first viewed our beloved host on the former MONSTER CHANNEL formerly online. The thing that drew him to the show; however, was actually not a usual story. In fact, the unique piece to the show that truly hooked him to CINEMA INSOMNIA was….THE HYPNOTIC EYE! The moment he saw it, he fell under the entrancing spell and has tuned into the show ever since. Also a few years ago, he attended the annual BLOBFEST held in Phoenixville, Pennsylvannia where he got to meet MR. LOBO.

As a child, Steven was allowed to stay up for CREATURE FEATURES which could be viewed in his hometown of Cambridge, England where him and his family lived. during that time. He still enjoys tuning into misunderstood films along with lower budget genre films which made him who he is today. He demonstrates his love for these films as well as CINEMA INSOMNIA and MR. LOBO through his art.

Each piece he creates is unique and from his heart as we can see in the art pieces of SLITHER(2006) and THE DEADLY MANTIS(1957) and MR. LOBO, of course.

Thank you, STEVEN COURSE, valued Sleepless Knight, for ALL of your support, for your incredible art pieces, and for watching all those Misunderstood Movies! Here is your FAN OF THE WEEK certificate that you can download and print. Congratulations, STEVEN COURSE –THE SLEEPLESS KNIGHT OF THE WEEK–for December 5th through the December 11th!

Loyal and Royal! Knurl Chubb from the Bay Area is our Fan of The Week!

Lobo_BorloffWe are thankful for this week for one of our very best CInsomniacs a Sleepless Knight who goes by the codename KNURL CHUBB. She wrote a nice, self-described “long winded dissertation” about CINEMA INSOMNIA and how she came to watch it, and live the life. She sent us some of her favorite pictures taken with her camera. She especially likes the one of Mr. Lobo at the first Lobotronic in Sacramento at the Studio Theater. Also the SECRETS OF HORROR HOSTING panel at Wondercon 2006, with Bob and John, and the historic meeting of Mr. Lobo and Karlos Borloff at Comic-Con in San Diego, 2009.

KTEH, KCTH, AMGTV, DVD, LIVESTREAM, ROKU, She’s followed CI from outlet to outlet and looking forward to watching new CI episodes, live hosted on Ustream. She thinks it’s really fun to chat with the other fans while she watches. She convinced her boss at TRILLIAM GRAPHICS to sponsor CI on KTEH and she made a blow-up banner and stickers of CI artwork!
“We used to watch the L.A. horror host Seymour on Saturday nights when I was a teen, and later in college, we watched Bob Wilkins’ Creature Features show in the dorm TV room. I often lamented that there were no horror hosts on TV any more, and always wished they would revive Creature Features.

Then, one Saturday night, second week of October 2005, I turned on the TV to watch the un-hosted monster movies, on KTEH out of San Jose, and it was Cinema Insomnia with Mr. Lobo. In the Halloween show, he played his new music video “Watching TV”. It was fantastic! I was completely and irrevocably hooked. Mr Lobo had totally captured the feeling of watching monster movies with my friends as a teen!

lecture2Lobo I want you! fixedI love the show because it is a perfect blend of current and retro, really well written, creative, and hilarious. It has always made me forget my troubles for a couple of hours and have a good laugh. My favorite Saturday night is to watch monster movies in PJs with some snacks and the cats snuggled up.

I like to try and collect all the shows so I can have a nice archive. I have a lot of them on DVD and even VHS, and now that they are on the internet, I’ll probably have digital files as well. I also love going to the live shows, they are the best!”

Knurl also sent us a selfie in her CI Santa eyeball hat from that first fundraiser at KTEH, waaaay back when.
CI MeThank you, KNURL CHUBB, valued Sleepless Knight, for ALL of your support, for MR. LOBO and CINEMA INSOMNIA, and for watching all those Misunderstood Movies! Here is your FAN OF THE WEEK certificate that you can download and print. Congratulations, KNURL CHUBB –THE SLEEPLESS KNIGHT OF THE WEEK–for November 28th through the December 4th!
