We Honor The Legendary Actors of Horror This Month at Cinema Insomnia!

a1cf5de4ec4296f23dca3dba714d956a   Actors, they can come from anywhere, be anyone, and portray a variety of characters. But it takes a true legend to portray a character in the horror genre. When we speak about legendary horror actors, who first comes to mind? Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr., Boris Karloff – these names barely scratch the surface of those who have haunted our dreams and televisions for decades.

vincent_priceHorror has been portrayed not only through the magic of film or television, it was also brought to life through the air waves in the days of radio. Horror Legends, Dear CInsomniacs and Sleepless Knights, are not limited to images or masks. Those who play upon your deepest fears of the corner of your imagination through their voice, now those, are where monsters truly begin to come to life.

This month, we’ll be saluting these legends, one at a time in various forms including radio broadcasts bits from horror radio actors. Also this month, Mr. Lobo will be hosting BRIDE OF THE MONSTER starring legend Bela Lugosi at the Anthony Wayne Theatre in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Mark your calendars and join in on the fun!

April Declared Annual FRANKENSTEIN MONTH!

Everyday April is Frankenstein Day! Promote Transplant Awareness! from OSI 74 on Vimeo.

This month holds a very special place in Mr. Lobo’s heart. On both OSI74 and CINEMA INSOMNIA, it is Frankenstein Month/Day/Transplant Awareness Month. For those who have followed closely with Mr. Lobo, you’ll remember last year Mr. Lobo’s son received a kidney from a family friend, making them officially a Frankenstein Family. Transplant donation is truly a life changing event for not only the recipient but also for the donor as well. In honor of this noble and selfless act, April will forever be FRANKENSTEIN MONTH here at CINEMA INSOMNIA.

images (1)This month, we’ll be commemorating the many faces of the FRANKENSTEIN monster. Much like Donors giving a piece of themselves to their recipients in order to save their lives, these actors gave life to Frankenstein’s monster and has kept the character alive for decades. From Boris Karloff to Christopher Lee and onward, we will be honoring each actor who has portrayed Frankenstein through photos, video clips, art, and even Cinema Insomnia’s episode featuring FRANKENSTEIN VS. THE CREATURE (2005). If you have any pictures, posters, fan art, or specific clips you treasure of this creature-post them! Send them to us through the comments or direct message us and we’ll share them! Let’s make this month memorable for all of 2016!

Happy National Donate Life Month! Happy Frankenstein Month!

Line Them Up For The New Addition to the Sleepless Knight Hall of Fame!

9a684c7e71d5bdff9c56ae9a5297528bFrom the city of Baltamore, SIR DANIEL MYERS started his entry into the world of Horror Hosts back n the days before cable television where households around the globe had only a mere 5 or 6 channels to choose from verses what is available today. There were occasions where he would tune into the smaller television stations who would show old black and white horror or science fiction films. On one particular night as he was flipping through the channels, he ran across an odd program broadcasting out of Washington D.C.  hosted by in his mind was an equally odd vampire, the one and only Count Gore De Vol!

Later down the road, Count Gore de Vol bid farewell to his former channel due to it being sold. It was a very sad day for Sir Daniel. But his sadness was soon ended when he rediscovered his childhood Horror host along with discovering some new faces including MR. LOBO. He reflects on his new discovery,

“Years passed and then one day while browsing the Internet, a familiar face appeared!  The Count was back with his very own website showing movies once more!  Not only was he back, he had friends! Fellow horror hosts from around the country who I had never seen before!  I looked them up and found many of them online too, including the amazing Mr. Lobo and Cinema Insomnia!  It was amazing seeing all the fun programs being created by everyone all around the country!  I could tell these were labors of love that likely involved a lot of hard work, time, imagination and likely expense…..

My thoughts on Cinema Insomnia…I just love the retro feel, look and surreal (and clever) sense of humor found on Cinema Insomnia.  I sometimes wonder if Mr. Lobo is a distant, if slightly unhinged, offspring of Twilight Zone creator, Rod Serling, making keen observations of both the featured films and the mysterious world they inhabit.  But wait!  There’s more!  I also love all of the well chosen cartoon shorts, the vintage commercials and, of course, the always entertaining, lovely and never wilting Miss Mittens.”

download () Sir Daniel was kind enough to give us a peek into his personal DVD collection of Horror Hosts DVDs including the latest addition to the CINEMA INSOMNIA DVuD Family: HORROR HOTEL.

“As you can see, I have built up a nice collection representing some of the best “misunderstood” films and the great horror hosts who care for them. To you Mr. Lobo – and to all of our great horror hosts – I salute you as a fellow Sleepless Knight and thank you for all that you do!”

download (2)Today, we salute YOU Sir Daniel Myers! Thank you for your support of not only CINEMA INSOMNIA and MR. LOBO but for the other Horror Hosts who are hosting their shows for both young and old. Welcome into the Sleepless Knight Hall of Fame!

Come back next week to see who else may join SIR DANIEL and the other long line of honorary Sleepless Knights! Who Knows, it may just be YOU!

We Welcome Sir Shannon Givler into The Sleepless Knight Hall of Fame!

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200

This week, we roll out the Silver Carpet for a Sleepless Knight, Whovian, and Misunderstood and Classic Movie Lover, Sir Shannon Givler! Give him a round of applause while we tell you more about him. Sir Shannon, much like a few other Sleepless Knights, discovered Cinema Insomnia on accident. Here is his story,

“I first discovered Cinema Insomnia by accident on a Saturday night about six years ago. While waiting for my pizza to come out of the oven, I began looking for something to watch on TV. The name “Cinema Insomnia” caught my eye, but all the on-screen guide said was: THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN’T DIE (1962). As soon as I saw that, I knew this was the show for me.I enjoyed the show very much as well as the others that followed. Eventually, I picked up many of the DVDs, too.”

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200

He began to explain what were the main factors of his love for the show and Mr. Lobo, the origins of his love for Classics and Misunderstood Film art, and he also gave a has “Misunderstood Film” recommendation for all of us to look into:

“I love the sense of fun that Mr. Lobo bring to these misunderstood films, along with the many retro touches such as the old TV commercials and movie trailers. Also, besides showing many of my old favorites, Mr. Lobo has introduced me to some new ones as well. (One of those being “Mark of the Damned”. Thank you, Mr. Lobo.)

I have been a fan of old movies, classic and misunderstood, since I was a kid. The show that first got me interested in them was a program that ran on PBS back in the early to mid-eighties called: Matinee At The Bijou, which also introduced me to the wonderful world of movie serials.

(If you ever want to see a great “misunderstood” serial, check out “The Phantom Empire” with Gene Autry. Cowboys, robots, and death rays. It doesn’t get any better than this). I especially love the old monster movies from Universal, Hammer, and Toho Studios, the Corman Poe films, the films of Val Lewton, and Master Filmmaker Edward D. Wood Jr.”

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200Sir Shannon is retro man at heart and holds his love of literature and music close as well. He enjoys diving into stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and E.E. “Doc” Smith. Music-wise, he enjoys collecting Space Age Pop and Exotica CDs. Artists such as Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Esquivel!, and Korla Pandit are some of my favorites.

While not reading, or listening to music, he tunes into classic shows as The Wild Wild West, Star Trek, Dark Shadows, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and, best of all, Doctor Who and Cinema Insomnia.

Thank you, Sir Shannon, for all of your continuous support over the years and support for Misunderstood films! Ladies and Gentlemen, give a round of applause and welcome Sir Shannon into the Sleepless Knight Hall of Fame!
